What's up with James Charles?

What's up with James Charles?

The American YouTuber James Charles has been repeatedly popping up on various news outlets these past few weeks due to some 'sister scandals' that he has been involved in.

I explore a couple of the top favourites according to various social media websites.

The dreaded visit to Birmingham city centre

Firstly, his visit to the UK didn't go down too well with some residents in Birmingham as his shop opening caused the city to go into a standstill due to the thousands of fans he drove to Bullring.

tutorials on his YouTube channel that has over 14
million subscribers.
People were not happy as they had to abandon their cars and find other means of transportation whilst he was present in the shopping centre. Other reports show that the gridlock could have been due to road works going on, but the appearance of 19-year-old Charles wouldn't of helped out the situation on January 26th 2019.

For those who aren't interested in James the anger came from the mayhem brought about from the crowds, however for James Charles himself, as well as his fans and supporters, the anger came from the way some UK news outlets reported on this situation that happened in Birmingham. The Mail Online stated in a headline to introduce an article about the star wrote: 'WhoTube? Virtually unknown US vlogger and his 8,000 screaming fans bring Birmingham city to a shock standstill with extra police drafted in amid crush fears as he opens cosmetics store'. Well, fans were quick to point out that those two descriptions don't go well together. How can he be virtually unknown with thousands of fans there to see him at his first UK appearance? Is what several people thought, including me. It was almost something to laugh at. James himself tweeted a screenshot of the article and tagged the Daily Mail UK in the tweet captioning the photo with: '"virtually unknown" and "8000 screaming fans" should not be used in the same sentence lol". Charles there addressing the humorous side of it all.

Just after the meet and greet and opening of the new Morphe (cosmetics store) in Bullring happened James took to the road in a few different transport vehicles. Whilst being in them the some of the most popular radio stations here in the UK were on and Charles had to witness several of the hosts from older generations speak about him and how they had never heard of him and questioning why he had attracted so many people. So, James took to his mobile and rang into a few of these stations to air his views and speak directly to the station hosts. His fans, finding this inspirational as he addressed the hate head on and getting his name cleared right away.

Another thing that made fans and personally my blood boil was the report on live TV on the matter. A BBC female news reporter ended her commentary with the claim that her makeup is nice because she 'takes advice from a woman and not a man'. So this implies that because James is a man and not a woman he cannot be good at makeup or not as good at makeup as women. This comment she made is not only highly sexist but just ignorant and rude against James' talent as a makeup artist. He has proven his worth to the world with the success of his ever growing YouTube channel alone. Not to mention the endless makeup collaborations and now the makeup he has released with Morphe, which he was in the UK to promote. Makeup is an art performed well by artists. Anyone of any gender can therefore be an artist. James creates looks that are very creative and has worked hard throughout his YouTube career to showcase this. He inspires a generation that love makeup to be their own self with makeup being the driving force that explores creativity. He encouraged fans after this news report went live not to bow down to temptation of becoming angry at this ignorant woman. The fans respected this decision.

I encourage anyone who is interested in this topic further, to watch the YouTube video titled 'In Defence of James Charles' by creator I'mAllexx who explains the problems with representing YouTubers in mainstream media in this light.

A sister sex tape rumour

In other news, James apparently had a sex tape leaked. Just 2 days after his mad visit to the shopping centre in Birmingham. Maybe this was all just a mad idea from him to cover up his scandal in the UK? Or maybe not, because Charles denies it all.

Rumours began on Twitter of James Charles
(pictured) having an intimate video leaked.
Fans claimed that they originally saw the video of James being intimate with someone who,to my knowledge still hasn't been named on Instagram.

James addressed the rumour with the sarcastic tweet: 'apparently my sex tape is going around!!??? this is exciting new to me considering I'm still very much a virgin lol", however this tweet didn't stop the YouTube star being slammed with tweets from fans across the world asking if the video was real or of him or not.

Coming into the month of February now with Charles still being harassed and the video being shared more he tweeted: 'if my sex tape ever DID leak, you all would know, because I would be posting it everywhere, fully monetized, with 34 mid roll ads' , obviously trying to speculate at the funny side of the situation.

Overall this hate that James Charles seems to be getting could represent the way mainstream media views not only beauty gurus, but creators of all kind that come from the website. It's been proven time and time again that these influencers really are well known and do attract big groups of people. The YouTube platform is forever growing and so are the channels on the website. I believe that the entertainment industry needs to start viewing these people as talent on the same level as they would actors, singers, TV stars etc. because they do have such a big influence on especially the younger generation that watch YouTube videos as much as they watch films and TV shows. Just because it is an online resource doesn't mean the content is any less important or entertaining. James Charles has proven this with his visit to the UK and all the hysteria it has caused.
